2 - YOUR PRAYERS

DEPEND ON GOD

The last session was a reminder that your words and actions will be imitated by the kids you serve. So it is crucial to nurture a healthy spiritual life that imitates Christ by leaning into the power of the Spirit. In this session, Josh will describe how that is done in prayer.

But, what exactly is prayer? Is there a right way to pray? What does it mean to pray to an invisible and omniscient God?

Prayer is simply talking to God...the God who spoke the universe into creation and the God who gives us life, breath, and love. It is acknowledging our dependence on God and approaching Him with confidence through Christ.

Is that hard for you to believe or trust? It was for Josh, too. Listen as he shares the fears and misconceptions he once had about prayer and why he is so passionate about prayer today.

What fears about prayer or misconceptions about God inhibit your prayer life? Who or what has most shaped your prayer life; good or bad? For example: parent, friend, Bible, media, suffering.

James 1:5-8 (ESV)

5If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him.6But let him ask in faith, with no doubting, for the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea that is driven and tossed by the wind.7For that person must not suppose that he will receive anything from the Lord;8he is a double-minded man, unstable in all his ways.

PRAY FOR CHILDREN

The very posture of prayer is one of submission and dependence. It assumes trust that God hears and cares, and trust that He lovingly holds all things in His hands. In this next video, you’ll be reminded of your responsibility to trust in the sovereignty of the Lord as you pray for the salvation of your kids.

Josh said, “The most important thing we can do in ministry is the very thing we are powerless to do…depend wholeheartedly on the Father whose job it is to draw kids to himself.” How does this increase your worship of the Lord? Does this dependence give you freedom and rest from worry in your role as a children’s ministry worker? Why or why not?

Philippians 4:6 (ESV)

6do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God.

Josh said, “Rather than audibly bellyaching, I challenge you today to take the next step to share that anxiety with God in prayer.” What is your typical response to anxiety? Do you internalize and let it build up, or do you audibly argue and complain? How did this video challenge and encourage you?

Do you trust that God hears, cares, and holds all things in His hands? Take time this week to sit in His presence and talk to him about your fears and doubts as well as the kids in your group and your personal anxiety. Ask him to increase your faith and trust.
