Teaching Students to Surrender Self featuring Francis Chan

Our students are bombarded with messages to go after more money and comfort, but we know this should not be our priority. This creative illustration urges us to trade our self-centeredness for a world that needs Christ.

You can also download "Definition of a Trader" by searching the title, click "Download Illustration" and show it to your students to inspire them.

As a leader of a youth group, God has given you a unique opportunity to encourage your teens to become “traders.” Imagine the impact your students could have right now—in their homes, schools, community and the world—if they would choose daily to follow Christ’s example and sacrifice for others in order to bring the hope of Jesus to those in desperate need.

Take a moment to pray for your group. Ask that God would use your students in a mighty way for His glory.

How have you challenged your group to make a difference in someone else’s life? How would you describe the results of this church’s $300 investment? Do you think this would be a good idea for your group?

Francis Chan is a nationally-recognized speaker and the best-selling author of "Crazy Love" and "Forgotten God." He is passionate about seeing teens display a much deeper love for Jesus and their neighbors. After hearing the story of how that youth group stepped up to the challenge of reaching out, Francis shows how he would motivate students to serve.

Francis mentioned that early in his Christian walk he’d go on mission trips for his own glory, so that he’d have something to brag about. Kind of a “Hey, look at what I did for God!” Are you seeing any problem of personal pride in your students who serve? How can you teach students to serve out of love and not pride?

With culture telling our students to go after money and comfort to succeed, let's encourage them to find out what Jesus is telling them.

The question for our students is, “How will you surrender your life to him?” They still need to use their skills. They're still working hard to be a success—except they’re letting Jesus define success. Let's make sure they realize if they want to find a life worth living, give it up to Jesus.
