1 - GRACE

CREATE A SAFE SPACE

You are a teacher and spiritual leader who can have a profound impact in the lives of the kids you serve. In this course, you will learn how to love and lead your kids well, laying the foundation for them to respond to the gospel, trust the church, and grow to know and follow Jesus.

As you watch this humorous illustration, consider the weight of that responsibility. Like a lifeguard, your kids and their parents depend on your leadership.

Fun is the goal...

If they need help, they'll come...

Let them pick which rules they want to follow...

Children are drowning to hear the hope of life in Jesus Christ. As illustrated in this video, it would be harmful to disregard safety for the sake of being liked. And in your role, the saving message of the gospel is more important than entertainment. In this session, Josh Denhart describes how to create a place of grace for children and parents that promotes flourishing and healthy fun.

Josh's encouragement is to adopt a heart of compassion. When is compassion a struggle for you? Thinking of your kids, list behaviors that may indicate there is something going on outside of group time. How does that change your view of their behavior and how can you react differently?

GIVE GRACE TO ALL

Have you ever had a kid lob a verbal bomb to insult or embarrass you in front of the group? In this video, Josh shares how he responded to a similar situation and why his response was so important in maintaining the safety dynamic of the group.

1 Peter 3:9 (ESV)

9Do not repay evil for evil or reviling for reviling, but on the contrary, bless, for to this you were called, that you may obtain a blessing.

You have the power to humiliate or humor, hurt or heal, and bore or inspire. Josh talked about taking a disrespectful kid aside to avoid crushing their spirit and continuing conversation. Who in your group tends to lash out? How do you respond to their disruptions? Is there anything that needs to change? Is there a situation that needs reconciling?

GIVE GRACE TO PARENTS

As you teach children, you also minister to their families. In this video, Josh shares how to maintain a perspective of grace for parents as you partner together for the well-being of their children.

Proverbs 17:12 (ESV)

12Let a man meet a she-bear robbed of her cubs

rather than a fool in his folly.

Josh used this verse to illustrate the natural instinct parents have to protect their kids. Have you ever experienced an irrational parent? Why did they react that way? How did you respond? What did you learn from this video that will help you in the future?

GIVE GRACE TO YOURSELF

Theological questions can confuse and stump even the most seasoned teacher. In this video, Josh shares how to transparently demonstrate humility, extending grace to yourself.

2 Timothy 2:15 (ESV)

15Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a worker who has no need to be ashamed, rightly handling the word of truth.
