Death is an uncomfortable subject. But the answer to the question, “What happens after we die?” is perhaps the most significant question we must answer, since it has such an impact on how we live. Death often brings up many difficult questions. In this clip, Max Lucado, author and pastor at Oak Hills Church in San Antonio, Texas, looks to Scripture to challenge our understanding of death and to provide true hope.


Max refers to little-known verses, Isaiah 57:1–2, to suggest that God sometimes takes good people away to protect them from future evil. How could this verse comfort people like Smith and Julie? Why doesn't God always spare people from future evil?

Max concluded by saying, "God is a good God and he knows exactly how long we should live and he knows exactly the right time to take us home." Even if we believe this with all our hearts, death is still painful for those who are left behind. How should you respond to people who are grieving deeply?

Sometimes, when people are grieving the loss of a loved one, the best thing we can do is sit in silence and grieve with them. Even if the person who died is in heaven, it may take a while for those left behind to be in an emotional place to hear that message. Pray for God's wisdom as you support and encourage those who are dealing with the distress of death.
